Children involved in L.I.F.E. programs will be introduced to life in the Catholic Church which is addressed in our curriculum as Prayer, Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, and Liturgy. Below is listed what children in 1st grade will focus on in the upcoming year.
General Focus
God is our Creator and loves us as our Father. Jesus came to tell us about God the Father and saves us through his life, death, and resurrection. The Holy Spirit shares the life of the risen Jesus Christ and forms the community of the Church. We know Jesus through personal prayer and by worshiping God together, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. We can thank Jesus for the gift of himself and the Holy Spirit by obeying the Commandments, caring for one another, and caring for the world.
Prayer
- Sign of the Cross
- Hail Mary
- Glory Be to the Father
- Lord’s Prayer
Scripture
Children will be introduced to the Bible and hear how God speaks to us through the stories.
Catholic Social Teaching
Primary focus will be placed on exploring their role in their families, communities, and Church. Children will be introduced to the concept that we are all brothers and sisters. God is our father and wants us to love each other.
Liturgy
The overarching theme of the Mass and sacraments will be taught. Specifically, children will be introduced to the liturgical calendar, Christmas, Pentecost, the Last Supper, and the Sacrament of Baptism.
Mass Notes
New this year, Mass Notes are a tool to help children focus on Mass while answering questions as well as asking a few of their own. These forms can be picked up and returned in the coat room.
Children in 1st grade will need to complete a minimum of 15 Mass notes during the year.

L.I.F.E - What is Whole Community Catechesis?
What is Whole Community Catechesis?
Whole Community Catechesis is a term that includes all of the components of the vision and mission of the formation process here at St. Michael's Parish. This process begins at birth and ends with death. The main objective is to bring all that participate into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.
This is accomplished through prayer and worship opportunities, interaction with others (both peer and intergenerational opportunities), awakening the awareness of the need to reach out beyond oneself and immediate community and instruction in the basic teachings of the Catholic faith, which flow, from Scripture and Traditions.
